Avamposto della Valtiberina adagiato nel cuore dell’Appennino, Sestino affonda le sue radici nell’età romana, quando era un importante “municipium” del quale restano significative testimonianze nel paese. Il territorio di Sestino è ricco di piccoli borghi di montagna e riserve naturali, all'interno delle quali vi è il Sasso di Simone, una superba formazione rocciosa che fu avamposto di Toscana.Il territorio di Sestino è molto ricco sia sott o l’aspetto naturalistico che storico. Interessante è la visita alle numerose frazioni come Monterone, ancora integro nella sua forma medievale, San Donato, con la splendida torre quadrangolare del XIII° secolo, oppure Casale dove, incastonate nell’abside esterno della chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo si possono ammirare le “mamme longobarde”, simboli pagani legati al culto della fertilità e della lattazione. Sestino è una terra antica, da sempre attraversata da popoli che vi transitavano, per via della posizione strategica e via unica di passaggio per molti viaggi e pellegrinaggi ,lasciando tracce del loro passaggio o/e della loro permanenza. Così tribù protostoriche, Etruschi, Piceni, Umbri, Galli Senoni e poi Romani hanno forgiato la storia e il territorio di Sestino.
A frontier post of the Upper Tiber Valley nestled in the heart of the Apennines, Sestino has its roots in the Roman era when it was an important “municipium,” of which significant traces remain in the town. The territory of Sestino is rich in small mountain villages and nature reserves, including the Sasso di Simone, a superb rock formation that once served as a frontier of Tuscany. The region is abundant both in natural beauty and historical significance. Notable is the visit to numerous hamlets such as Monterone, still intact in its medieval form, San Donato, with the splendid 13th-century square tower, or Casale, where you can admire the “Longobard mothers” in the external apse of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, pagan symbols related to fertility and lactation rituals. Sestino is an ancient land, always traversed by people due to its strategic location as a unique passageway for many travels and pilgrimages, leaving traces of their passage and/or residence. Tribes from prehistory, the Etruscans, Picenes, Umbrians, Senonian Gauls, and later the Romans have all shaped the history and landscape of Sestino.
