Di antiche origini etrusche, fu popolata anche in epoca romana. A partire dall'XI secolo fu feudo dei marchesi Bourbon del Monte. Il paese, che mantiene intatto il suo tessuto urbanistico medievale è una bomboniera posta in una suggestiva posizione panoramica su zone coperte in gran parte da boschi di castagni secolari e sulle valli umbre e toscane, potendo spaziare con lo sguardo dalle Alpi Apuane al Gran Sasso d'Abruzzo, se la giornata è limpida.
Of ancient Etruscan origins, it was also inhabited during the Roman era. From the 11th century, it became a fief of the Bourbon del Monte marquises. The town, which has preserved its medieval urban structure, is a little gem set in a picturesque panoramic position over areas mostly covered by centuries-old chestnut forests and the Umbrian and Tuscan valleys, offering a view that stretches from the Apuan Alps to the Gran Sasso of Abruzzo, on clear days.
